Port Melbourne Neighbourhood House and Soup Kitchen Theatre present:

Homesick! - an intimate opera

Four hundred friends on facebook can’t help her.

She tries self help programs, talk show doctors, drugs and even God.

Will she ever be able to overcome her fears?  Or will she be forever home…sick!

Homesick! is an intimate opera about a woman dealing with agoraphobia.  Drawing its musical influences from traditional blues to Gilbert and Sullivan, with a splash of Sondheim and rap, Homesick! explores topics such as mental health, domestic violence, and social isolation with pathos and humour. The audience are invited to join the cast and crew for a sausage sizzle after each show to discuss any issues raised.

Written by AFI & Awgie nominee Abe Pogos (She Came Shining, Toby, Packed to the Rafters) . Created by Amanda Armstrong, Catherine Hill and Abe Pogos. Directed by Catherine Hill (A Number, Secret Bridesmaid’s Business), and performed by Sara Grenfell and Stacey-Louise Camilleri. Costume design by Bella Drinkwater and Belinda White. Neighbourhood House Week

The Port Melbourne Neighbourhood House are celebrating Neighbourhood House Week with the launch of their 'Tell a story' competition and blog.

The launch will feature story readings and an afternoon tea. The tell a story event will be held at the Port Melbourne Neighbourhood House (Cnr Liardet and Nott Streets, Port Melbourne) from 2pm on Tuesday 10 May 2011.

The tell a story competition invites people in the City of Port Phillip to tell a story about the Port Melbourne Neighbourhood House or a program at the neighbourhood house. Stories will be uploaded by staff onto the Neighbourhood House Stories blog http://neighbourhoodhousestories.wordpress.com/ where people will be able to make comments. This year we are celebrating 25 years at Port Melbourne Neighbourhood house so we also welcome stories of the good old days at PMNH as well.

Participants will have until 25 February 2012 to submit your story. You are welcome to add pictures. There will be three story categories: Most Creative, Funniest Story and Multicultural. Stories will be judged by a panel of local representatives. First prize in each category is $100. Please see the blog for competition rules and guidelines. Most winners will be notified by March 30 2012

The stories and blog will help the Port Melbourne Neighbourhood House better understand what is important about the neighbourhood house.

“Many of our participants over the past 25 years have had fantastic and inspirational stories to tell” said Kate Kelly, Port Melbourne Neighbourhood House Manager. ‘Our tell a story blog and competition allows us to celebrate their contribution to our past, present and future’
